Our Impact

FairVote’s founders came together in 1992 with a fervent belief that our country could do more to create a healthy democracy for all. Their enthusiasm was met with skepticism by many who believed the idea of changing winner-take-all elections was unrealistic. Today, FairVote promotes solutions that translate our votes into power and create incentives for our elected leaders to be truly accountable and responsive to their constituents. These solutions include ranked choice voting (RCV) and proportional representation.

Until 2000, there were only two jurisdictions in the U.S. that used RCV. Since then, the number has expanded to 49 cities, counties, and states using RCV in public elections. Over 800 RCV elections have been held, with more than 30 million ranked choice ballots cast. Nearly 14 million voting-age citizens live in cities, counties, and states that use RCV, a more than tenfold increase since 2004.

FairVote is the national driving force advancing RCV  in both its single-winner and proportional forms. We work closely with national, state, and local partners to advance the RCV movement in line with our core competencies:

  • Catered research, policy, and legal guidance
  • Communications support
  • Cross-partisan engagement and partnerships
  • Innovation
  • Strategy and learning support
