Former GOP Chair Michael Steele endorses ranked choice voting

During a Wednesday appearance on NBC News, former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele expressed his support for ranked choice voting (RCV).

During the conversation, NBC host Chuck Todd asked whether ranked choice voting would make it harder for political parties to game elections by promoting polarizing candidates in the other major party’s primaries – with the goal of elevating a weak general-election opponent.

Steele agreed, saying he tried to introduce reforms during his time as party chair. He noted that RCV and open primaries “[change] the nature of the game. Let’s get rid of this primary system which only plays to the hardened edges of both parties.”

Michael Steele is just the latest political leader to endorse this better way of voting. RCV is also supported by figures like U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), former Gov. Gary Herbert (R-UT), U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), former Gov. Bill Weld (R-MA), and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
