Governor Tim Walz has track record of supporting ranked choice voting

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, whom Kamala Harris just selected to be her running mate in the 2024 election, has a track record of supporting ranked choice voting (RCV).

In 2023, Walz signed an election omnibus bill that authorized a task force to study using RCV statewide in Minnesota. In 2024, he signed the Minnesota Voting Rights Act, which authorized the proportional form of ranked choice voting as a remedy for voting rights violations, among other voting rights protections.

Ranked choice voting is one of the ways to make sure people feel like their vote is being counted, feel like it really matters. It increases participation and gives us better trust in our democracy. I fully support it.

Gov. Tim Walz

In 2022, Tim Walz spoke at a Rally for Democracy with FairVote Minnesota and other pro-democracy groups in the state capitol, where he signed a pledge to support election reforms including RCV.

Ranked choice voting is the nation’s fastest-growing election reform, with widespread support across the political spectrum. Recently, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Colorado Governor Jared Polis, Utah Senator Mitt Romney, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson have all endorsed RCV as well.

RCV is already used in five Minnesota cities – including Minneapolis and St. Paul, the largest city and state capital, respectively. In 2023, when opponents of RCV attempted to repeal it in Minnetonka, MN, voters approved RCV by an even wider margin than they had the first time – showing that when voters use it, they like it!
