Maya Mahdi is a senior at Virginia Tech majoring in philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) and minoring in statistics expecting to graduate in May 2023. She is also the founder and director of Hokies Vote Caucus (HVC) – Virginia Tech’s nonpartisan voting rights and civic engagement student program at VT Engage: The Center for Leadership and Service Learning. As the director, she organizes and facilitates all voter education presentations, voter registration drives, advocacy trainings, deliberative dialogues, and other civic engagement events. Maya has also recruited over 300 poll workers at Virginia Tech and lobbied Congress for Special Olympics International funding. Outside of school and work, she volunteers at Second Time Around – a local thrift shop where all proceeds go to the no-kill Montgomery County Animal Shelter. Her hobbies include reading, painting, and hiking. Topics she is passionate about include voting rights, women’s rights, judicial reform, education policies, and disability rights.
