September 19, 2023 – FairVote, a nonpartisan organization seeking better elections for all, announced its support for the reintroduced John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which aims to restore and modernize the full protections of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965.

David Daley, Senior Fellow at FairVote, said:

The Voting Rights Act is perhaps the most important and successful  legislation in our nation’s history. It has made the right to vote a reality for millions of Americans, and helped us move ever closer to our democratic ideals.

Yet, this bipartisan legislation – whose major provisions received nearly unanimous support in Congress less than 20 years ago, including a 98-0 vote in the U.S. Senate  – has been chipped away, eroding its impact and our own multiracial democracy.

We are proud to support the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, as we did when earlier versions were proposed in 2006 and 2013. These reforms are fundamental to a future where every American’s voice counts.
