Saying goodbye to RankIt.vote
After about five years, FairVote is saying goodbye to our ranking app, RankIt.vote.
We first developed RankIt to ensure that the ranked choice voting (RCV) movement always had access to a free tool for running RCV elections. Whether you used RankIt for fun, to educate others, or to make group decisions, the app was meant for you. We’re so proud of the product and grateful for the support you’ve all shown!
However, in the years since we developed the app, the RCV movement has grown faster than we ever could have imagined. The number of Americans with access to RCV has more than tripled, RCV groups have formed in nearly every state, and RCV bills have been considered in Congress and most state legislatures. Along with that growth, a number of other online tools have emerged for running RCV elections, many of them at least as high-quality as our own. Other apps do a great job of meeting the needs of this movement, so FairVote no longer feels the need to maintain RankIt.vote.
It’s still important to us that the movement has access to a free polling tool. With that in mind, we’re pleased to recommend RankedVote and offer free access to those within the RCV movement. RankedVote can run RCV elections with an unlimited number of candidates, simulates realistic ranked ballots, includes security measures to prevent duplicate votes, and has ballots available in over 20 languages. Sign up for RankedVote for free using the link below.
If you’re still using RankIt.vote, you can keep using it during the next couple months as we discontinue it. Here’s what to expect:
- Phase 1: Starting on April 3, you’ll see a pop-up message when you access RankIt.vote. You can still access your account and create new polls, but polls will only be able to accept votes until May 31.
- Phase 2: Starting on April 17, no new polls can be created on RankIt.vote. Any open polls can continue to receive votes for another six weeks.
- Phase 3: Starting on May 31, all polls will be closed to new votes. You can still access your account if you need to download data from old polls, but you cannot create new polls or re-open old polls.
If you want to download the data from any of your RankIt.vote polls, there are two ways to do so.
- You can export results to RCVis, a free tool that creates visualizations of RCV election results. From your poll’s main page on RankIt.vote, click “Export Results to RCVis.” Your browser will redirect you to a new page on RCVis.com that shows your results. You can save or bookmark that URL on RCVis and return anytime to see your election results.
- You can export raw data in CSV format. From your poll’s main page on RankIt.vote, click “Download Results (CSV).” The poll must be closed in order to download results.
