FairVote Statement on Allen v. Milligan Decision
June 8, 2023 – David Daley, Senior Fellow at FairVote, shared the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan:
“Today’s decision is a win for fair representation and multiracial democracy. This was a textbook claim under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, and the Court rightly affirmed Section 2’s role in preventing racial gerrymanders and ensuring representation for Black and minority voters.
“The work to strengthen our democracy and build a more perfect union must continue, especially in light of other recent Supreme Court decisions that have greatly narrowed the scope of the VRA. FairVote stands with voting rights organizations in the fight to preserve the VRA, and to pass the bipartisan John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – whose major provisions passed the U.S. Senate by a 98-0 vote in 2006.
“We also encourage a continued conversation about other tools and strategies to support the goals of the VRA and ensure every voice counts.”
