Exit poll: Redondo Beach voters overwhelmingly understand ranked choice voting, like it, and say it’s easy
87% say they understand RCV well, 61% say they support it, 83% say it’s easy
March 12, 2025 – A new post-election poll from Lake Research Partners finds that Redondo Beach, California voters understand ranked choice voting (RCV), like it, and say it’s easy. Redondo Beach used RCV for the first time in its March 4 municipal elections.
Key findings of the poll include:
- 87% of Redondo Beach voters say they understand RCV well
- 61% say they favor RCV, more than a 2-to-1 margin over the 25% opposed
- 83% say they found ranking candidates for mayor easy, compared to 12% who said it was difficult
- 76% say they ranked two or more candidates for mayor, compared to 16% who ranked only one
- 25% say they were more likely to vote for their favorite candidate in an RCV election, compared to 2% who say they were less likely
“Everywhere ranked choice voting is used, voters say they like and understand it – and Redondo Beach is no exception,” said Marcela Miranda-Caballero, Executive Director of Cal RCV. “RCV empowers voters with more choices, and eliminates costly runoffs that ask voters to come back to the polls and vote in the same election two months later. Redondo Beach is showing Southern California how cities can improve their elections with ranked choice voting.”
The new poll adds to a growing evidence base in California and nationwide, with exit surveys repeatedly finding that voters like and understand RCV. Ranked choice voting is now used in over 50 cities, counties, and states home to 17 million people.
Poll Methodology
Lake Research Partners designed and administered this survey of 250 March municipal election voters in Redondo Beach, CA, which was conducted using live telephone and text-to-online interviewing. The survey was conducted March 1-6, 2025. The margin of error for the full sample is +/-6.2%.
