Evanston Overwhelmingly Votes "Yes!" on RCV

Evanston, Illinois is one of the latest jurisdictions to say “yes!” to ranked choice voting (RCV). After the city council voted to refer a ballot measure to voters, asking whether they would like to use RCV for municipal elections, the measure won with a landslide of 83% in favor.

Cook County recently released precinct- and ward-level results. Almost all voters chose to weigh in on the RCV measure. In each of Evanston’s 9 wards, at least 92% of people casting ballots chose to vote on the ballot measure. Further, the ballot measure fared extremely well across all wards. In each ward, 80-85% of voters said “yes” to the ballot measure despite varying levels of voter turnout across each ward.

Evanston has 46 precincts. Even in the measure’s worst performing precinct, nearly 75% of voters still voted yes to RCV (in the measure’s best performing precinct, 100% of voters said yes).

Evanston is a demographically diverse township. RCV’s extremely strong performance throughout Evanston demonstrates that its “more choice, more voice” message won across age and racial lines.
